The 2026 Heroes of Hospice Annual Awards Luncheon will once again shine a light on unique individuals who have shared their experience, strength and hope to inspire everyone around them through their individual, personal and professional contributions around the corner and around the world.
Dr. Fred Kass — Medical Award
A longtime friend and champion of Hospice of Santa Barbara, Dr. Kass has supported our work for decades. As an oncologist, he was an early supporter of HSB’s Patient Care Services program and has referred many patients and families for its compassionate, non-medical support. Dr. Fred Kass is renowned in his field and served at the Santa Barbara Cancer Center from it's inception until recently as he prepared for retirement. His loving and outstanding care of area cancer patients makes him an outstanding candidate for this award.

How Valuable Are RFID Blocker Wallets?

Radio Frequency Identification Devices are the subject of conversation from travel experts like Rick Steves and Johnny Jet, as well as frequent travelers who have experienced financial nightmares when their credit card information was compromised while traveling through an airport or walking in crowded cities.
Rick Steves, renowned travel expert, recently reported how shocked he was to arrive in Rome to a call from Chase Bank requesting confirmation that he had made charges on his card in India on that same day. Steves spoke with the bank and assured them he had his card, needed it for his current stay in Italy, and did not understand how this could happen. The bank informed him that he was a victim of a credit card breach. That someone had been able to swipe his information while he was traveling through the airport and had used it to make purchases. Apparently, this can happen to anyone at any time without blocking protection.
The new (RFID) Wallet Blockers look ordinary, but they feature built in meshes or carbon fiber layers to disrupt signals to block credit card information theft. They can also protect your phone from information theft. It is recommended to disable Bluetooth when not actually using your phone to protect your information when traveling.
Regarding automobile travel it is always wise to check for scammers at gas pumps when filling up your rental car, or at home to protect yourself from card identity theft.
I found a very attractive travel wallet protected with (RFID) online that I highly recommend, which holds my passport, cards, cash and slim phone that I will now use when traveling to be safe, and I recommend money belts, or waste purses, which I have used for years while traveling around the world or when attending events with crowded venues.I also have an attractive looking anti-theft purse; there are many brands to choose from online, and they are very effective in that they are made of cut proof fabric and keep thieves in crowds from stealing your valuables without you even noticing.
Remember, if you find your card has been compromised immediately a) notify your card company, b) monitor your accounts, and c) set up new password information. As I mentioned, when on a long-awaited vacation trip, cruise or an important business travel trip it pays to create advance protection and avoid the possible nightmare of becoming a victim of identity theft. So, take a few precautions to be safe and not sorry to ensure you have happy and safe travels always!

INGREDIENTS
For The Tacos
6 ounces chicken thighs, boneless and skinless
2 tablespoons mojo marinade
1 cup red quinoa, cooked
1/2 teaspoon salt
4 corn tortillas
1 cup baby kale
1 tablespoon curry kraut, Hosta Hill
3 tablespoons guacamole
1 ounce apple pico de gallo
For The Mojo Marinade
(recipe yields 20 tablespoons)
1/2 jalapeño
3 tablespoons cilantro, chopped
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 tablespoon dry oregano
1/2 cup lime juice
1/2 cup orange juice
1/2 tablespoon orange zest
4 teaspoons garlic, minced
For The Guacamole
(recipe yields ~7 tablespoons)
1 avocado
2 tablespoons cilantro, chopped
2 teaspoons lime juice
2 tablespoons red onion, minced
1-1/4 teaspoons jalapeño, minced
1/2 teaspoon salt
For The Apple Pido De Gallo
(recipe yields 8 ounces)
2 tablespoons red onion, diced
2-1/2 tablespoons jalapeño, diced
2-1/2 ounces watermelon, diced
5 ounces Granny Smith apples, diced
1 tablespoon cilantro, chopped
1-3/4 teaspoons lime juice
1 pinch salt
INSTRUCTIONS(FOR 2 PEOPLE)
To Make the Mojo Marinade: (MAKE AHEAD)
Chop the jalapeño and add to a blender with all remaining ingredients. Blend until smooth.
Marinate the chicken with the mojo marinade overnight.
Person A
Make Guacamole
Mash avocado then add in remaining ingredients.
Stir until combined.
Make Apple Pico de Gallo
Small dice red onion, jalapeño, watermelon, and Granny Smith apples.
Add to a bowl along with all remaining ingredients and mix to combine.
Prep Toppings
Season the cooked quinoa with 1/2 teaspoon of salt.
Measure out baby kale and curry kraut.
Keep ready for assembly.
Person B Grill Chicken
Fire up your grill and cook the marinated chicken.
Prepare Tortillas
Warm the corn tortillas on the grill (2 tortillas per taco).
Assemble Tacos
Assemble tacos in this order: tortillas, chicken, kale, kraut, quinoa.
Plate
Serve tacos with a side of guacamole and apple pico de gallo.
